Nox Medical claims win over Natus Medical in EU sensor patent spat

Nox Medical, Natus Medical

Nox Medical yesterday touted a win in a European patent spat with Natus Medical (Nasdaq: BABY) over patents related to biometric connectors.

Iceland-based Nox Medical said that the European Patent Office determined that its European patent, related to its RIP Belts, were “valid as amended” in proceedings brought against it by Natus.

The company went on to say that it believes that its patent will also survive further proceedings if Natus decides to appeal.

Nox Medical said that a U.S.-based patent infringement case against Natus, claiming infringement related to the same patent in the European dispute, is slated for trial beginning on April 30. Nox added that Natus “conceded to infringing various claims” of Nox’s patent and that Natus is focused on the validity and enforceability of the patent.

Nox said that it will continue to pursue its patent infringement claims, and that it is “encouraged by the court’s and the USPTO’s recent rulings.”

“Innovation in the field of sleep medicine is very important to us at Nox Medical. We believe that it is important for all industry players to contribute to advancing our field and to respect patented innovations, otherwise it puts the whole field in danger of stagnation and idleness,” Nox Medical CEO Petur Mar Halldorsson said in a press release.
