Report: Smith & Nephew to shutter UK plant

smith & nephewSmith & Nephew (NYSE:SNN) reportedly plans to shutter a plant in York, U.K., by the end of next year, relocating 80 workers there.

The British healthcare giant is building a new U.K. commercial hub near London, according to the York Press. Workers at the York facility will be moved to other Smith & Nephew operations, including the new London hub, another location in Hull, U.K., or in the U.S., the newspaper reported.

Earlier this month, Smith & Nephew withdrew some of the smaller components used with its flagship Birmingham hip replacement, after reviewing data showing that the smaller devices have a higher revision rate that larger sizes.

The British orthopedic device maker said a review of data in the U.K.’s National Joint Registry of England & Wales found revision rates in men implanted with the smaller devices, and all women, “exceed the current benchmark established by the U.K. National Institute for Health & Care Excellence.
