EOS Imaging touts sterEOS workstation study data

EOS ImagingEOS Imaging said today that a clinical study examining the association of sagittal balance measurements and risk of falling in elderly patients reported a correlation between the falling risk and postural balance measured using its sterEOS workstation.

The study results are slated to be presented at the French Rheumatology Congress in Paris this week, EOS Imaging said.

“The analysis of sagittal balance and overall posture are emerging as key elements in the management of diseases related to aging. The results of this preliminary study show how EOS systems can be used for the 1st time in prevention and screening. We are pleased to see that our solutions are enabling significant progress in this area,” CEO Marie Meynadier said in a press release.

In the 122-patient study, individuals received an EOS exam postural alignment parameters were measured with the sterEOS workstation postural analysis software. Results showed that specific parameters are associated with the risk of falling and can be used to improve individual falling-risk assessments.

“The prevention of fall and fracture risk in the elderly is a public health priority and screening at-risk patients must be simple and reliable. The preliminary results obtained by the analysis of sagittal balance with EOS are extremely encouraging, especially in light of this need,” Christian Roux of Paris’ Cochin Hospital said in prepared remarks.

The EOS platform provides 2D and 3D full-body, stere-radiographic images of patients in functional positions, EOS imaging said. The exams use less radiation than digital radiology or basic CT scans, the company said.

Approximately 30% of people 64 or older fall at least once a year, EOS imaging said, and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimated the medical cost of the falls to be $34 billion in 2013.
