Boston Scientific releases ureteral stent tracker app

Boston Scientific

Boston Scientific (NYSE:BSX) has launched a new app designed to help urologists track ureteral stents implanted in patients with kidney stones.

The app was developed as a joint operation between the Marlborough, Mass.-based medical device company and digital healthcare tool developer Visible Health, according to the company’s website.

The tracker is designed to address issues with retained ureteral stents by making them more visible to both the care team and the patient themselves, Visible Health said.

Boston Scientific said that 13 out of 100 ureteral stents will be forgotten after implantation, and 10 of those 13 will become encrusted and increase the risk of infection and obstruction, requiring an average of 2 surgical procedures to remove the stents.

The use of digital tracking tools reduces the rate of forgotten stents to 1 in 100, Boston Scientific reported.

Last month, Boston Scientific said it won CE Mark approval in the European Union for its Eluvia peripheral vessel stent for above-the-knee procedures.

Marlborough, Mass.-based Boston Scientific said it plans to immediately begin commercializing the Eluvia drug-eluting stent in Europe and other nations that recognize the mark. The paclitaxel-coated Eluvia stent is indicated for treating lesions in the superficial femoral and proximal popliteal arteries, the company said.
