Mobile ultrasound developer Clarius Mobile Health said yesterday it released the 1st smartphone-connected portable ultrasound scanner designed to work with Apple IOS and Google Android devices.
The device will be premiered at the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine Conference in New York this week, the company said.
“Physicians have been asking for a portable ultrasound system that works with their iPhone for some time. The challenge has been to make an affordable device that is small enough to carry around and that also produces great images. I’m happy to say we’ve succeeded in creating a product that will enable more clinicians to use ultrasound anywhere to improve patient care. It’s as easy to use as a mobile phone camera,” CEO Laurent Pelissier said in prepared remarks.
The Clarius ultrasound scanner is wireless and operates with a mobile app on a smart device, and is designed to be highly portable for quick exams and to guide procedures such as nerve blocks and targeted injections, the New York-based company said.
Clarius said it is awaiting regulatory clearance from the FDA, CE Mark approval in the European Union and Health Canada clearance for the device, and said it will offer several mobile scanners for the price of a single traditional system.
