3. Canon wins exclusive negotiating rights for Toshiba Medical
Canon beat out Fujifilm Holdings for the exclusive right to negotiate with Toshiba for its medical device business, the embattled Japanese conglomerate said.
“Toshiba has carried out a close evaluation of the overall proposals received from companies that expressed an interest in acquiring [Toshiba Medical Systems Corp.], including their appraisal of TMSC’s value and the feasibility of successfully completing the transaction, and determined that the proposal from Canon Inc. is superior to that of the other companies,” Toshiba said. “The effective period for the exclusive negotiating rights is to March 18, 2016. Toshiba will continue discussions with Canon Inc. during that period, toward reaching final agreement.” Read more
2. Medtronic scales back at former Covidien HQ in Mass.
Medtronic is scaling back in Mansfield, Mass., as it looks to cut costs at the former headquarters of its Covidien subsidiary.
Medtronic spokesman Fernando Vivanco told MassDevice.com today that Medtronic is consolidating from 4 to 3 buildings it leases in Mansfield, about an hour south of Boston. Read more
1. Bill Hawkins on his time at Medtronic, Immucor and 25 years in the hot seat
For nearly a quarter of a century, William “Bill” Hawkins sat in the corner office of medtech companies of all sizes, before stepping down from Immucor last year to become the Atlanta-based company’s lead director.
Hawkins is best known for his 4 years as CEO of Medtronic, where he served in the corner office from 2007 to 2011. His time at the helm of the world’s largest pure-play medical device company was not without drama. For example, Hawkins’ first major decision as CEO was canceling shipment on the company’s top product, the Sprint Fidelis pacemaker lead, already implanted in some 268,000 patients. Read more
