Smith & Nephew (NYSE:SNN) today released data from a new research publication analyzing ulcer prevention programs, which included use of the company’s Allevyn Life silicone foam dressing, touting a significant decrease in hospital-acquired pressure ulcers.
The study was conducted at Indianapolis’ Eskenazi Health adult intensive care unit, with results published in the American Journal of Critical-Care Nurses.
“Smith & Nephew has a strong heritage of innovation in advanced wound management. By sharing the meaningful data results, we hope to increase awareness and emphasise the importance of prevention programmes for hospital-acquired pressure ulcers. Our mission is to support healthcare professionals to improve lives of patients. We welcome these findings and strongly believe they will help healthcare providers, clinicians and administrators to better manage the clinical and economic burden of HAPUs in similar settings worldwide,” advanced wound management chief medical officer Dr. Bert Slade said in a press releae.
The research reported that hospitals which adopted standardized protocols for preventing and treating HAPUs reported a 69% decrease in HAPUs and an estimated potential savings of nearly $1 million.
The Allevyn Life dressing was introduced to the protocol after 3 months, and the HAPU prevention program was eventually integrated hospital-wide post-study, Smith & Nephew said.
“This study validates the need for a comprehensive, proactive, collaborative prevention programme in hospitals. Although it is difficult to isolate the effects of individual programme components, silicone foam dressings can complement an existing pressure ulcer prevention programme, and are believed to contribute to the reduction in HAPUs,” Eskenazi RN Rachel Culpepper said in prepared remarks.
Additional components of the program included education and an extra focus on protocol adherence for patient care, the company said.
