Swedish medtech company Bioservo Technologies said today it is licensing robotic glove technology developed through a partnership between General Motors and NASA, looking to a possible developments of soft exoskeleton tech for medical uses.
Bioservo will combine tech from its Soft Extra Muscle glove with the force-multiplying tech from the RoboGlove, planning uses for the new device that include medical rehabilitation and other fields where additional grip strength is needed.
“Combining the best of 3 worlds – space technology from NASA, engineering from GM and medtech from Bioservo – in a new industrial glove could lead to industrial scale use of the technology,” Bioservo Technologies CEO Tomas Ward said in a press release.
The RoboGlove is designed with sensors, actuators and tendons to mimic the nerves, muscles and tendons in the human hand, and technology used in the device was designed to operate tools designed for humans
The company said its 1st development will be a grasp assist device for industrial use to reduce fatigue in hand muscles.
“The successor to RoboGlove can reduce the amount of force that a worker needs to exert when operating a tool for an extended time or with repetitive motions,” GM global manufacturing engineering veep Kurt Wiese said in prepared remarks.
Financial details of the licensing deal were not disclosed.
