Canon inks MR dev deal with Quality Electrodynamics

Canon (NYSE:CAJ) Medical Systems said today it inked a deal to develop new magnetic resonance technologies with Mayfield Village, Ohio’s Quality Electrodynamics Research Center.

As part of the deal, Canon Medical Systems said it installed a Vantage Galan 3 Tesla MR system at QED’s new research center to be used in efforts to develop new MR technologies, including development and testing of radio frequency coils, the company said.

“Canon Medical Systems’ state-of-the-art MRI technology marks the first phase of the QED Research Center’s community collaborative innovation platform exploration. As a strategic partner of Canon Medical Systems, we hope to provide the most cutting-edge MRI technology while continuing to grow our strong pipeline of innovations, which will be accelerated by the installation of a new Galan 3T system,” QED Research Center president Dr. John Patrick said in a press release.

The newly installed system will also be available to local academic researchers and other commercial organizations to test compatibility and performance of products in an MR environment, Canon Medical Systems said.

“This partnership with the QED Research Center will help provide Canon Medical Systems with significant access to research that will inform our own development of new clinical applications so that customers can deliver better care to their patients. We are thrilled that QED Research Center will benefit from the advanced technology available on the Galan 3T MR system and we are eager to work with them to expand the clinical use of MR,” Canon Medical Systems CT, PET/CT & MR biz unit senior director Dominic Smith said in a prepared statement.

Earlier this month, Canon said it would change the name of its acquired Toshiba Medical Systems to Canon Medical Systems, bringing it in line with the rest of the company.
