Zimmer Biomet moves Puerto Rican workers to Indiana

Zimmer BiometIn the wake of the devastation left by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, Zimmer Biomet (NYSE:ZBH) is sending dozens of its employees from the island to northeast Indiana.

Large portions of Puerto Rico remain without electricity and medical device companies have struggled in the last few months to get their facilities back up and running at full capacity.

The move will bring 45 Zimmer Biomet workers and their families to Columbia City in Whitley County, adding 200 residents to a 9,000-person town.

“Frankly, we’re really excited about it,” Columbia City Mayor Ryan Daniel told WPTA21. “Very rarely do you have a small community like ours have had this opportunity where multiple families, 45 families, end up coming to our community. And we want to make sure they can plant roots here.”

Local politicians told the news outlet that they hope the new residents will choose to stay in Columbia City for years to come.

“We would hope that the individual would maybe decide that this is a great community and that they would want to spend their lives here and beyond that we really don’t know what the company’s plans are,” Jennifer Romano of the Whitley County Chamber of Commerce added.

The community is reportedly working on putting together a resource fair to help the new families do things like find a doctor in their neighborhood. They are also establishing resource and job fairs for spouses and family members of the Zimmer Biomet employees.
