Report: Q3 medical device recalls hit highest point since at least 2000

StericycleMedical device recalls have reached their highest point since 2000, according to a new report from Stericycle‘s (NSDQ:SRCL) ExpertSolutions business.

Numbers for med device recalls rose 29% over the previous quarter, according to the report, up to 339. Recalled devices increased 187% to approximately 116 million, the highest number since Q3 of 2012.

At 59.1%, the majority of the recalls were recalled due to quality issues, according to the report. Software and mislabeling issues were behind 48.1% of the recalls, with leakage accounting for only 4.6% of recalls.

Only 47% of the medical device recalls were international, which Stericycle said was the lowest level in the last 4 years. Approximately 55% of recalls were nationwide, according to the report.

A total of 50 companies experienced more than 1 recall during the 3rd quarter of 2016, the highest numbers since 2014.

Stericycle reported in March that medical device recalls had fallen to their lowest point since 2013 during the 1st quarter of this year.

Both the number of recalled units and the actual number of recalls hit 3-year lows, coming in at 30% below their 2-year quarterly averages.

About 75% of the largest recalls during the quarter were related to machine failure, Stericycle ExpertSolutions said, noting that the 2 largest recalls were for machine failure and collectively accounted for more than half of the total number of recalled units.
