Greatbatch (NYSE:GB) said today it inked a deal with wireless charging company WiTricty to supply its wireless charging technology to Greatbatch.
Through the agreement, Frisco, Texas-based Greatbatch will commercialize the wireless charging systems for medical devices of its own, as well as systems for OEM manufacturers.
“Using WiTricity technology, Greatbatch is creating an accelerated path to the next generation of wirelessly-charged medical devices. We believe the application of highly resonant wireless power will improve safety, reliability and usability profiles in medical devices, and enable new features that address unmet clinical and user needs. Our continued efforts with WiTricity will expand our innovation in wireless power transfer for the medical device industry,” CTO George Cintra said in prepared remarks.
The 2 companies said they have been collaborating on wireless power designs for medical devices since 2012. Greatbatch said they are positioned to begin commercializing the charging systems for a variety of devices and power profiles.
“Medical applications are a natural fit for WiTricity technology, and the opportunity in the medical industry could rival the consumer electronics and automotive industries where wireless charging is gaining momentum. Wireless power transfer provides a host of benefits in medical applications, and working with a leader like Greatbatch allows WiTricity to address this market as quickly and efficiently as possible,” CEO Alex Gruzen said in a press release.
WiTricity’s charging systems used magnetic resonance technology, which allows for charging at a distance and through non-metallic materials like plastic or glass. WiTricity said this would allow manufacturers to create closed systems with no ports necessary to charge, amking them easier to sterilize.
