Paulsen to serve on Ways & Means Health subcommittee

Medical device taxAuthor of multiple medical device tax repeal bills, Erik Paulsen (R-Minn.) will now serve as a member of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health, according to a press released published today.

The Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health covers legislation related to programs providing payments for health care, health delivery systems, or health research, including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Affordable Care Act.

“We need to work together in a bipartisan manner to create a health care system that protects the doctor-patient relationship, reduces costs, encourages quality, and ensures access for individuals, employees, and families. Minnesota is a leader in health care delivery and medical innovation, and I will continue championing life-improving and life-saving medical technology and enacting fundamental reforms to our health care system,” Paulsen said.

Paulsen has authored and supported bills which aim to repeal the medical device tax on multiple occasions.

The most recent bill authored by Paulsen looking to repeal the medical device tax enacted as part of Obamacare, the Restoring Americans’ Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act, passed in October.

The legislation included the Protect Medical Innovation Act which eliminates the 2.3% excise tax on the sale of medical devices.

The 2.3% levy on U.S. sales of prescribed medical devices was enacted as part of the Affordable Care Act and went into effect at the beginning of 2013. It’s forecast to raise between $20 billion and $30 billion over 10 years.
