3. Study: Boston Scientific’s Watchman cheaper than drugs in reducing afib stroke risk

A study comparing the stroke risk for atrial fibrillation patients treated with Boston Scientific‘s Watchman device with the anticoagulant drug warfarin and non-warfarin oral anticoagulants found Watchman to be more cost-effective than its counterparts.

Watchman is a catheter-delivered cardiac implant designed to close off the left atrial appendage, to prevent blood clots from forming there that could later cause a stroke. Read more


2. Stryker loses bid to toss ex-sales rep’s counter-claims

Stryker this month lost a bid for summary judgment in a lawsuit against a former sales rep who jumped ship for Zimmer Biomet.

Stryker in 2013 sued a pair of former sales agents, Christopher Ridgeway and Richard Steitzer, accusing them of scheming to poach reps and business from Stryker in Louisiana and New York. Stryker fired Ridgeway in September 2013, after discovering that he was allegedly running a pair of medical supply businesses on the side. In June of that year, Stryker alleged, Biomet began courting Ridgeway, allegedly looking to bring his entire Stryker sales teams on board. Ridgeway also allegedly induced a 3rd Stryker employee, Sheldon Green, to jump ship for Biomet and forwarded Stryker’ Louisiana customer list to Green, according to the complaint. Read more


1. Jury adds $70m in damages to $9.8m Ethicon stapler loss

A California state jury added $70 million in damages to the $9.8 million it awarded the plaintiff last week in a product liability lawsuit over Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Ethicon‘s PPH 03 hemorrhoid stapler, the plaintiff’s attorney’s said.

Plaintiff Florence Kuhlmann alleged that during hemorrhoidoplexy surgery in January 2012, the defective stapler misfired, sealing her anal canal and leading to 21 days of emergency hospitalization, infection and abdominal surgeries including a full laparotomy and colostomy, according to Alexander Law Group, her counsel in the case. Read more
