3. Decision Dx wins test strip patent challenge to J&J’s LifeScan
A federal appeals court yesterday upheld a U.S. Patent & Trademark Office decision that a blood glucose testing patent owned by JNJ subisidary LifeScan is invalid.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit’s per curiam decision, issued without comment, was a win for Decision Diagnostics subsidiary PharmaTech Solutions and its GenStrip 50 test strip. PharmaTech designed the GenStrip 50 to work with LifeScan’s OneTouch Ultra glucometer line, Decision Dx said. Read more
2. Titan Medical debuts Sport robot assisted surgery prototype
Titan Medical yesterday introduced the prototype of its Sport robot-assisted surgery device to investors in New York as it gears up for 1st-in-human trials this year.
Titan is chasing TransEnterix in the race to challenge robot-assisted surgery’s dominant player, Intuitive Surgical, and its da Vinci system. TransEnterix’s SurgiBot is expected to hit the U.S. market during the 1st half of this year; Titan’s Sport offering is anticipated for mid-2017. Read more
1. Medtronic inks $221m IRS settlement
Medtronic agreed to pay out up to nearly $221 million to settle a tax dispute with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service that it inherited when it bought Covidien last year.
The IRS dunned Covidien’s corporate predecessor, Tyco International, in June 2013, disallowing deductions it took from 1997 to 2000 for some $2.8 billion in loans made between 3 former Tyco divisions. Read more
