3. Bayer taps strategy head Baumann for CEO

Bayer named strategy chief Werner Baumann to replace Marijn Dekkers as CEO, prompting some industry watchers to speculate that there’s more deal-making ahead for the German firm’s non-pharma markets.

Baumann, who’s slated to succeed Dekkers May 1, joined Bayer in 1988 and made a name for himself with the successful integration of rival drugmaker Schering in 2006 – at the time Bayer’s biggest-ever takeover – and was a driving force behind the acquisition of Merck & Co’s consumer health unit 8 years later. Read more


2. Nico wins $15 million for BrainPath neurosurgery device

Nico Corp. said it raised $15 million of a hoped-for $18 million funding round, led by prior backers River Cities Capital Funds and the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, for its BrainPath neurosurgery device.

Indianapolis-based Nico said in a regulatory filing that 41 investors participated in the round, which nearly doubled its previous fundraising efforts. Read more


1. NuVasive loses $42m sales poaching case

A federal jury in California slapped NUVA with a $41.8 million judgment after finding that the spinal implant maker poached sales reps from 1 of its distributors.

Madsen Medical, a Nevada-based distributor, sued San Diego-based NuVasive in September 2013, after being fired in 2012. Owner Kris Madsen alleged that NuVasive breached its contract when it lured 6 Madsen Medical reps to sell directly to their former Madsen clients, according to court documents. Read more
