RTI Surgical said today it launched its Unison-C anterior cervical fixation system designed and indicated for stand-alone anterior cervical interbody fusion procedures for treating degenerative disc disease.
Along with the launch, the company reported that the 1st human implantation of the device had been performed during an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion last week.
“The instrumentation is designed with efficiency in mind. I appreciate the fact that I can place the implant, deploy the fixation and secure the locking mechanism all through a single instrument. I feel that the streamlined surgical technique combined with a stable zero profile construct gives my patients the greatest potential for a successful outcome,” Dr. Joseph Blythe of Nashville, Tenn.’s St. Thomas Midtown Hospital said in a press release.
The device is cleared for use at a single level of the spine from C2 to T1 in skeletally mature patients, and consists of an intervertebral body device with an integrated locking mechanism and 2 screws. The Alachua, Fla.-based company said the system is designed for use with an autograft or allograft.
“The Unison-C System is an exciting addition to our direct business’ spine portfolio that allows us to compete in the standalone interbody market. We were excited to work with Dr. Blythe on this first implantation and look forward to sharing this technology with other surgeons as we expand our offerings and improve patient care,” CEO Brian Hutchison said in prepared remarks.
The device is contained within the disc space, which the company said alleviates the need for supplemental fixation. The device’s instrumentation features an all-in-one implant inserter and guide to allow surgeons to complete all required steps.
Last week, RTI Surgical said it inked a deal with Oxford Performance Materials to license its OsteoFab platform for spinal applications.
OPM’s OsteoFab is a next-generation implant manufacturing process to build implantable medical devices layer by layer using only light and Oxpekk polymer, the Alachua, Fla.-based company said.
