Medtronic claims title to world’s 1st app-based remote monitoring for pacemakers

MedtronicMedtronic (NYSE:MDT) said today that its Canadian subsidiary won approval there for the world’s 1st app-based remote monitor for pacemakers, the MyCareLink Smart system.

The Health Canada nod allows patients with compatible Medtronic pacers to use a smartphone or tablet to send data to caregivers, using a handheld portable device reader and the MyCareLink Smart app, the Fridley, Minn.-based medical device company said.

The data is sent via a secure cellular or Wi-Fi connection to Medtronic’s CareLink remote monitoring network, which the company said is used by more than 1 million patients.

“The use of smart technology continues to grow among people of all ages, and especially among people over 65, which is the age range of the majority of our pacemaker patients,” Medtronic Canada president Neil Fraser said in prepared remarks. “As a leader in remote cardiac monitoring, Medtronic is committed to providing cardiac patients with the latest technology to improve their health and make their lives easier, while helping to reduce the costs of healthcare. The MyCareLink Smart Monitor is just the 1st of many innovative solutions we are developing that leverage smart technology to increase patient engagement.”
