Gordian Surgical launches 1st-in-human trials of TroClose 1200

Trendlines Medical portfolio company Gordian Surgical said today it launched 1st-in-human trials with its TroClose 1200 trocar designed to enable access to the abdomen during laparoscopic surgery, as well as closing the access through suturing incisions in the abdominal wall.

The Israel-based company’s TroClose 1200 is designed to be used to open the abdomen and insert surgical tools to start a procedure, and is equipped with an integrated closure system to allow for closing incisions.

“The innovative device functioned very well and allowed for closure of incisions that would have been very difficult to perform without the use of Gordian’s product. The product is safe, user-friendly and represents an important breakthrough in laparoscopic surgery,” Dr. Nissim Geron of Israel’s Poriya Medical Center said in a prepared statement.

The TroClose 1200 uses a novel release mechanism in which sutures are inserted into the tissue at the beginning of the procedure and anchored to remain in place throughout the operation. The sutures are tightened and the wound is closed automatically when the TroClose 1200 is removed, the company said.

Product development on the TroClose 1200 was completed this year, with 1st-in-human trials in Israel and India underway. The company said that 13 laparoscopic procedures have been performed with the device.

Last October, Gordian Surgical said it raised nearly $1 million in a new round of funding joined by Chinese venture capital firm Virtus Inspire Ventures. The company did not say who led the round, but said it was joined by a number of leading U.S. laparoscopic surgeons and other investors.

Last September, Trendlines portfolio company Elastimed said it raised $1 million to support its development of ‘smart’ compression stockings.

The Israel-based company is developing a wearable smart material stocking to treat chronic venous insufficiency and prevent deep venous thrombosis, according to a press release.
