J&J's Codman Neuro launches aneurysm coils

Johnson & Johnson‘s (NYSE:JNJ) Codman Neuro said yesterday it launched a new platform of embolic coils for the treatment of brain aneurysms. The announcement was made at the Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery’s annual meeting.

The new platform of coils come with enhanced detachment systems that Codman Neuro said improve microcatheter stability. The coil’s delivery wires are marked with tactile fluoro markers to increase visibility during procedures, the company said.

“Our coils are unique because they allow the physician to truly tailor the procedure at every step. Coupled with a new, softer delivery system, our coil platform is designed to improve how aneurysms are treated, and is an example of the continued commitment of Codman Neuro to innovation in neurovascular care,” Codman Neuro worldwide prez P. Laxminarain said in prepared remarks.

To treat aneurysms, coils are deployed through a minimally invasive procedure to control for weak spots on blood vessels, the company said. The newly released platform of coils can be used at each step of this treatment, in framing, filling and finishing, Codman Neuro said.

“The Codman Neuro family of coils and detachment system provide the best of both worlds; a softer detachment and 3 types of coils that help me individualize treatment based on the anatomy of the aneurysm. Also, the new fluoro markers may help tactically navigate the procedure better,” Dr Ajit Puri of Worcester, Mass.’s UMass Memorial Medical Center said in a press release.

Last September, Codman Neuro ticked off regulatory wins in China, South Korea and Taiwan for the company’s Revive SE thrombectomy device.
