Boston Scientific cuts 455, closes 2 facilities; Abbott drops 244

Boston Scientific (NYSE:BSX) and Abbott (NYSE:ABT) are making cuts from their workforce, according to a California Warn notice report.

Boston Scientific is slated to drop 455 as it closes 2 facilities in the Fremont and San Jose areas. The company said it is moving the operations from the golden state to a manufacturing facility in Costa Rica.

“As part of Boston Scientific’s ongoing efforts to streamline its operations to better serve the needs of our customers and their patients, the company announced plans in 2013 to move its single-use device operations in Fremont and San Jose, CA, to our manufacturing facility in Costa Rica. This decision leverages Boston Scientific’s current infrastructure, skills and capabilities. We are now nearing the completion of this transfer, and as a result, manufacturing of these devices in the San Jose and Fremont sites will cease by the end of October,” a Boston Scientific representative told FierceMedical Devices in an email.

The facilities in Fremont and San Jose manufacture devices for electrophysiology and imaging, according to the company’s site. That includes coils, stent systems, retrieval devices, IVUS catheters, ultrasound imaging devices, ablation catheters and other devices.

Abbot will be letting go approximately 244 employees from its California facilities, according to the warn notice report, with 163 being laid off in Temecula and 81 from Santa Clara, where Abbott’s headquarters are located.

“As we had previously communicated, internally and externally, Abbott made adjustments to its workforce to increase efficiencies and remain competitive in a challenging global environment. We notified all impacted employees of their last day on July 30,” an Abbott spokesman told FierceMedicalDevices in an email.
