In this episode of DeviceTalks, we delve deeply into emotion with MIT scientist and entrepreneur Rosalind Picard and her story of how teaching computers to recognize emotions led to a potentially major breakthrough in medical technology.
Picard is also the chief scientist at Cambridge, Mass.-based Empatica, an early-stage firm that’s developed a smart watch and other wearable technologies designed to detect seizures.
The watch, dubbed the Embrace, “has the slickness of a Jawbone Up and the brains of a PhD student,” according to Wired. The technology, which comes out of Picard’s research at the Media Lab at MIT, detects stress levels by tracking electrodermal activity in the skin.
Picard says that’s a far more sensitive measure of people’s excitement or stress levels than others, even heart rate.
In this podcast, you’ll hear about the backstory behind the Embrace watch, her book Affective Computing, and more from this pioneer of wearable technology.
