Medtronic launches MiniMed Connect in U.S.

MedtronicMedtronic (NYSE:MDT) said today it launched its MiniMed Connect diabetes monitoring system in the U.S..

The monitor allows patients who use it to connect their continuous glucose monitors and insulin pumps to their smart phones to view and share the data, Fridley, Minn.-based Medtronic said.

The MiniMed Connect consists of a small portable device, a smartphone app and a mobile or PC-based web display to track and view insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor data, the company said.

“Effective management of diabetes requires an engaged team of participants, and MiniMed Connect serves to inform and involve people with diabetes, their loved ones and their health care professionals. Safe and secure sharing of critical diabetes data is an important step for Medtronic as we transform into a holistic diabetes management company,” Diabetes service and solutions business prez Annette Bruls said in prepared remarks.

MiniMed Connect also allows remote monitoring, text-based notifications for family or caretakers when glucose levels are too high or low and alarms to be set related to the glucose and insulin information, Medtronic said. The data is also collected for healthcare workers, who can use the it to adjust treatment plans for patients, the company added.

“I tested MiniMed Connect during a recent hike, and it was great to just look at my phone and watch my glucose levels during the trek. Strenuous exercise frequently causes my sugar levels to drop, and this trail was tougher than I anticipated. The convenient access to my sensor information was such a huge help; this was the first hike I’ve made it through without going low,” blogger Karen Graffeo said in a press release.

The device is compatible with the company’s MiniMed 530G and MiniMed Revel systems, according to the company. The MiniMed Connect will initially be available on Apple‘s (NSDQ:AAPL) iOS devices, but the company is working with Samsung Electronics (LON:BC94) to develop a version for Google‘s (NSDQ:GOOG) Android.

Medtronic won FDA 510(k) approval for the MiniMed Connect in June.
