Steve Ubl, the longtime CEO at medical device lobby AdvaMed, is reportedly leaving the organization after 17 years to take the top spot at the pharmaceutical industry’s largest trade group, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America or PhRMA.
The Hill, citing an unnamed source, said that Ubl “will more than likely” take over as president & CEO at PhRMA. A spokesman for the organization told the website today that “a decision has not been made yet.”
Ubl has spent the last 10 years of his tenure at AdvaMed as president & CEO, raising the medical device industry’s national profile and leading the fight against the medical device tax enacted as part of Obamacare. He was the 6th-highest-paid healthcare lobbyist last year, with total compensation of almost $2 million, according to an analysis by Modern Healthcare.
PhRMA’s leader, John Castellani, announced plans to step down in April after 10 years as CEO.
