Debiotech, Fresenius partner to develop home dialysis tech

Debiotech, Fresenius Medical CareSwiss med device firm Debiotech and dialysis device developer Fresenius Medical said today they are partnering to develop home-usable peritoneal dialysis technologies.

The companies said they aim to create a platform of dialysis machines that are lightweight and compact to allow patients to travel with the device and use them at home.

The newly partnered companies added that they intended to develop an easy-to-pickup set of instructions for the devices to make them easier to adopt for new users.

“This agreement represents an ideal synergy to help patients everywhere who suffer from end stage renal disease receive the most appropriate treatment at home. We are very proud to work together with Fresenius Medical Care’s outstanding teams in order to bring new home peritoneal dialysis products to market and offer the hope of improved quality of life for many patients around the world,” Debiotech CEO Dr. Frédéric Neftel said in a press release.

The partnership between Fresenius and Debiotech will be globally exculsive outside of the Japanese market, the companies said. The companies said the deal will support multiple generations of new devices.

“We are dedicated to continuing to produce home dialysis machines that are as easy and convenient as possible for our customers to operate, because this is what they demand and deserve. We expect that collaborating with such an exceptional team will provide dialysis patients with generations of products that will offer them a new level of ease of use and flexibility to help them meet their goal to dialyze at home,” Fresenius prez Mark Costanzo said in prepared remarks.

In May, Debiotech said it wants to blend continuous glucose monitoring technology made by an Oregon outfit into its JewelPump disposable insulin patch pump, a move toward a functioning artificial pancreas.

The company announced an option to grab exclusive rights to CGM intellectual property developed by iSense CGM of Wilsonville, Ore.

Neither side disclosed financial details. Assuming an exclusive rights option, Debiotech said it was looking at combining iSense-made sensors into its JewelPump device and related “all-in-one” remote control communication device.
