3. Zipline raises $19m for Zip surgical closure tech

ZipLine Medical, which last week reported a more than $16 million funding round in a regulatory filing, said today that it pulled in $19 million for its Zip surgical wound closure technology, led by new backer MVM Life Science Partners and including existing investor China Materialia.

“This financing allows us to further expand our global sales and marketing activities leveraging the favorable clinical study results and strong support from key opinion leaders among clinicians,” president & CEO John Tighe said in prepared remarks. Read more


2. Prospects for proxy war heat up at HeartWare

HeartWare International is facing another potential proxy battle after a 2nd activist investor firm took out a stake in the implantable heart pump maker.

Last month Engaged Capital, which owns about 1.3% of Framingham, Mass.-based HeartWare, said it’s prepared to launch a proxy war over the proposed acquisition of Israeli replacement heart valve maker Valtech Cardio. Engaged Capital nominated 3 candidates – Cardiovascular Systems interim CEO Scott Ward, Tornier CFO Shawn McCormick and its own senior analyst Brendan Springstubb – for 3 spots on HeartWare’s 8-member board. Read more


1. Appeals court upholds $2m pelvic mesh award against Bard

MassDevice.com news

A federal appeals court last week upheld a $2 million loss for C.R. Bard in a product liability lawsuit brought over its Avaulta pelvic mesh.

A jury awarded plaintiff Donna Cisson $250,000 in compensatory damages and $1.75 million in punitive damages back in August 2013, in 1 of the 1st of thousands of federal lawsuits to go to trial over pelvic mesh implants. The devices are designed to treat female urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Read more
