MST wins FDA nod for robotic surgery software

Medical Surgical TechnologiesRobotic surgical software developer Medical Surgery Technologies said yesterday it won FDA 510(k) clearance for its Follow Me minimally invasive robotic surgery software.

The Follow Me software is designed to enable image-guided laparoscopes to follow laparoscopic surgical tools without manual control, according to the company.

“Securing FDA clearance for the Follow-Me software is a major milestone for MST, making AutoLap the only market-approved image-based system with image-guided functions for various minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures. We are already commercializing AutoLap with the Follow Me software in Europe, and we now look forward to expanding marketing and sales of the surgeon-focused system in the U.S. in 2016,” CEO Motti Frimer said in a press release.

The software allows surgeons to virtually tag the surgical tools within the surgical cavity, and interacts with the surgeons in-vivo movements and gestures to follow its tools in real time, MST said.

The Follow Me software is an advanced function of the company’s current AutoLap image-guided laparoscopic positioning system, the company said.
