ndd Medical said Wednesday it is sponsoring a new documentary about ex-Star Trek actor Leonard Nimoy’s struggle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in hopes of aiding other patients struggling with COPD.
The documentary, COPD: Highly Illogical – A Special Tribute to Leonard Nimoy, aims to be entertaining while educating about COPD through the actor’s story, and detail modern diagnostic techniques and treatments as researchers search for a cure.
“We at ndd are very excited to be involved with this project and as a company that develops pulmonary function testing equipment, we believe this documentary will be a game changer. If diagnosed early, COPD can be managed and quality of life improved. This movie will deliver that message far and wide,” marketing director Joy Tobin said in a press release.
The company reported that Nimoy gave his blessing to the project before dying of complications from COPD in February 2015. The movie is expected to release later this year, coinciding with Star Trek‘s 50th anniversary, and is being produced by Nimoy’s Daughter Julie and her husband David Knight.
“Leonard felt he had a responsibility to educate people about COPD and create awareness,” Knight said in prepared remarks.
