Hansen Medical (NSDQ:HNSN) today released data from a study involving the use of its Sensei X robotic navigation system during pulmonary vein isolation procedures, touting a 100% procedure success rate, a high freedom from recurrence rate after 1 year and reduced fluoroscopy times.
Data from the study was published in the Journal of Cardiac Electrophysiology, the company said.
“There is a substantial amount of innovation in the treatment of atrial fibrillation for catheter ablation, including distal tip contact force sensing catheters like SmartTouch. Early studies have indicated that the combination of SmartTouch and Sensei robotic navigation could provide improved outcomes for patients,” principal study investigator Dr. Joe Gallinghouse of Austin, Texas’ St. David’s Medical Center said in a prepared statement.
The aim of the study was to evaluate catheter contact force with and without the Sensei X system during pulmonary vein isolation procedures, Mountain View, Calif.-based Hansen said. All procedures also used the Thermocool SmartTouch ablation catheter.
“The Sensei robotic system is a key technology which enables electrophysiology procedures. The results from the team at Cardiologico Monzino in Milan prove the need for this critical technology. By continuing to innovate technologies, more and more physicians have the ability to achieve these types of results, ultimately providing the patients with perfected outcomes,” CEO Cary Vance said in prepared remarks.
Hansen said it recently completed enrollment in its Artisan AF Investigative Device Exemption study to support expansion of the device’s indications in the U.S.
In January, Hansen saw share prices surge after the beleaguered robot-assisted surgery company said it’s seeking the proverbial “strategic alternatives.”
Hansen, which makes the Magellan and Sensei surgical robots, said it formed a special committee of its independent board members to evaluate potential moves, including a sale of the company and tapped Perella Weinberg Partners as a financial advisor.
