Medtronic launches new cervical spine platform in the U.S.

MedtronicMedtronic (NYSE:MDT) said today that it launched its Spine Essentials platform for cervical spine fusions.

The offering is aimed at increasing the efficiency of the most common 1- and 2-level fusion procedures, using sets with the most common implant sizes sterile packaged with smaller instrument sets. Compared with standard kits, the Spine Essentials kits cut cost by requiring 44% fewer instruments and 91% fewer items needing sterilization, Fridley, Minn.-based Medtronic said.

“Healthcare systems are under intense economic challenges, and Spine Essentials is an example of how Medtronic can bring value to spine surgery by optimizing costs and efficiency,” Medtronic spinal president Doug King said in prepard remarks. “We’re committed to delivering successful patient outcomes more efficiently, but we can’t do it alone, which is why Spine Essentials was developed with the input of physicians and hospitals.”

“As a surgeon who routinely performs these types of surgeries, it’s helpful to optimize the implants and tools, so we’re being as efficient as possible to provide the best care possible to our patients,” added Dr. Richard Wohns of Puyallup, Wash.-based neoSpine.

Medtronic said the Spine Essentials kit, released today at the annual meeting of the Ambulatory Surgical Center Assn. in Dallas, collaborated with surgeons and hospitals to create the kit using technology developed by Dr. Gary Michelson.
