Fred Lampropoulos’ life reads like something out of a Horatio Alger novel.
Lampropoulos, 65, started South Jordan, Utah-based medical device company Merit Medical Systems (NSDQ:MMSI) in 1987 and has grown it to more than $500 million in annual sales. He also served in the Special Forces (Airborne), ran for public office twice in Utah and opened for rock legends such as The Doors and The Beach Boys.
Despite his many achievements, Lampropoulos told MassDevice that he sees his job in medtech as his life’s work and is determined to grow Merit to a $3 billion company, an ambitious goal to say the least.
Still, Lampropoulos is confident that the long-term approach his team has taken at Merit will carry the company through. For example, he told us the company purchased 10,000 acres of property next to its headquarters when the business was just a couple of years old, with the idea that he would one day build a sprawling campus.
“We’re nearly 30 years into the life of the company and we’re still working on the business plan,” Lampropoulos said.
In this podcast, Lampropoulos sat down with MassDevice.com publisher Brian Johnson to discuss his career and the story behind Merit Medical.
