FDA clears Siemens’ Somatom Drive CT scanner

Siemens HealthineersSiemens (NYSE:SI) said yesterday it won FDA 510(k) clearance for its Somatom Drive computed tomography dual-source scanner.

The newly-cleared Somatom Drive system is designed to include Straton MX Sigma X-ray tubes and Sigma generations which the company said enables more targeted beam focusing and eliminations using high energy levels at low voltages. Low voltage levels could allow for less contrast to be used during imaging, the company said.

“Siemens Healthineers is proud to introduce the high-performance SOMATOM Drive dual source CT system, which provides our customers with the flexibility to deliver more precise imaging – and potentially further reduce patient dose through the utilization of multiple KV settings,” Siemens Healthineers NA veep of computed tomography Douglas Ryan said in a press release.

Siemens said the Somatom Drive CT system is capable of performing pediatric CT exams with no sedation as the system is equipped to support lowered radiation doses specifically for pediatric patients.

Earlier this month, Siemens said it signed a collaborative deal with Insightec to develop compatibility between Insightec’s Exablate Neuro system and Siemens Magnetom Aera and Skyra 1.5 Tesla and 3T clinical MRI systems.

The companies said the agreement will expand Siemens diagnostic imaging portfolio and will allow existing and future Siemens MRI customers access to the Exablate Neuro system.
