Diabetes: Philips unveils data-collection app

PhilipsRoyal Philips (NYSE:PHG) said it collaborated with Netherlands-based Radboud University medical center to produce a digital application designed to collect and share data from patients living with type 1 diabetes.

The application will allow users to connect to an online community of type 1 patients and can collect and connect data from electronic medical records and personal health devices, including glucose meters and activity monitors, the company said.

“I am excited that we are providing people with diabetes the tools to connect all of their relevant health data and devices. Our system allows sharing of data and experiences in one community, where they can collaborate with fellow patients and their care teams in a secure environment. There is a growing need for solutions that enhance self-management and continuity of care for those with chronic conditions such as diabetes to reduce health deterioration, re-admissions and mortality rates. This system has been designed by patients for patients and is enabling fully integrated health management and care delivery in a new, connected, efficient and highly patient-centric way,” Philips healthcare informatics solutions CEO Jeroen Tas said in a press release.

The community connection through the app will allow healthcare professionals to interact with patients and the community through private messages and shared posts, Philips said. The application is built on Philips HealthSuite digital platform.

“Empowering patients to be true partners in their own health care by giving them access to their data and by facilitating collaboration is the key to driving change across populations. By collaborating with Philips, we’re creating the digital framework necessary to make data actionable and transform how patients engage with their caregivers and social community,” Radboudumc REshape Center director Lucien Engelen said in a press release.

A prototype version of the program is slated to be available as a pilot release by the end of this year, Philips said.
