5. FDA expands indication for Sapien XT, Sapien 3 valves from Edwards Lifesciences
The FDA said today that approved an expanded indication for the Sapien XT and Sapien 3 replacement heart valves for intermediate-risk patients.
Previously, the transcatheter aortic valve replacements were only available for high-risk patients. The FDA approved the Sapien XT device in June 2014 and gave the nod to the Sapien 3 for the high-risk cohort a year later. Read more
4. Toshiba Medical Systems enters the race for Takeda’s chemicals subsidiary
Toshiba Medical Systems, the medical device business Toshiba is selling to Canon for $6.5 billion, reportedly entered the race to acquire a chemicals subsidiary of Takeda Pharmaceutical.
The Nikkei business daily reported today that Takeda is looking to sell its 70% stake in Osaka-based Wako Pure Chemicals Industries, with the 1st round of bidding closing August 16. Read more
3. Kentucky joins Calif., Wash. state in suing J&J’s Ethicon over pelvic mesh
Kentucky joined California and Washington state in suing Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Ethicon over its pelvic mesh products, accusing the company of deceptively marketing its treatments for female urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.
Ethicon is already facing tens of thousands of product liability lawsuits over the pelvic mesh devices; in Kentucky, more than 15,000 women were implanted “without Johnson & Johnson and Ethicon providing sufficient information about the known hazards so women and their doctors could make informed treatment decisions,” according to a press release from Kentucky attorney general Andy Beshear. Confluent Medical Technologies, formed last year when Nitinol Devices & Components acquired Interface Catheter Solutions, last week said it closed another buyout for an unspecified amount. Read more
1. SeaSpine acquisition of NLT Spine could be worth $53m
SeaSpine said yesterday that it agreed to acquire Israeli firm NLT Spine in a deal that could wind up being worth $52.5 million.
Kfar Saba, Israel-based NLT makes a line of minimally invasive spinal implants for lumbar fusion procedures that are designed to expand after implantation. The deal with Carlsbad, Calif.-based SeaSpine, which spun out of Integra LifeSciences last year, calls for an up-front cash payment of $1 million and up to $43 million more in contingent payments pegged to sales of the NLT products. SeaSpine has the option of making a 1-time payment of $18 million after the deal closes in lieu of any further contingent payouts. Read more
