Spine Wave launches Velocity expandable lateral spine implant

Spine WaveSpine Wave said today it is launching its Velocity L expandable interbody device and XLR II lateral access system, both of which are designed for lateral surgical approaches for spinal procedures.

The expandable device is designed to minimize impaction of large lateral implants into collapsed disk spaces through a slim profile which expands to the desired disc space height, the Shelton, Conn.-based company said.

“The Velocity L is the culmination of a multiyear effort to develop an implant that embodies all the characteristics surgeons desire in a lateral expandable interbody device. We believe that this revolutionary new expandable device, when coupled with new XLR II access system and the abacus lateral spacer system, will provide Spine Wave with a compelling offering for surgeons performing lateral procedures,” CEO Mark LoGuidice said in a press release.

Upon expansion, the Velocity L is designed to allow the surgeon to place “significant amounts” of bone graft into the graft chamber, with a load-bearing core made from PEEK.

The implant is contained in a titanium shell for increased strength, with a plasma sprayed titanium coating for appropriate surface texture. The system is designed to be implanted with the newly released XLR II access system, the company said.

“I believe strongly in the importance of preserving endplates as part of a comprehensive surgical strategy to minimize the risk of subsidence. The Velocity L implant allows me to insert a very low profile device, thus minimizing trauma to the endplates, while its expansion capabilities allow me to achieve optimal indirect decompression. The device also has a huge graft chamber which can be easily filled post expansion. I’ve also been impressed with the new XLR II lateral access system which is as easy and intuitive as any retractor on the market and it’s more versatile than most. I believe expandable devices represent an important step forward in lateral surgery which is why this system is now an important part of my surgical armamentarium,” Dr. Fred Mo of the Georgetown University Hospital said in prepared remarks.

In late May, Spine Wave said it closed a $11 million round of new financing to support “the largest product portfolio expansion in the company’s history.”

The round was led by existing investors New Enterprise Associates and Acadia Woods, and joined by Compass Global Fund, Industry Ventures, Collinson, Howe and Lennox, California Technology Partners and MB Ventures, the Shelton, Conn.-based company said.

Funds for the debt financing round came from 30 investors, according to an SEC filing, though the filing only showed $4.4 million raised so far for the company.

Spine Wave said it has several new products, including next-gen expandable technologies, currently in a limited market release, with plans for a full commercial launch of 7 new products over the next 12 to 18 months.
